Studio Shoot Research: 1st Assistant Director



Assistant directors are referred as ADs, they support directors by organising and planning everything on set. Directors are more focused on communicating with the actors, while for ADs they are more focused on communicating with the film crew. 1st ADs will do most of the planning before a production, and manage the set during filming so that the director is free to concentrate on the creative process.

Responsibilities:

-work with the director to break down the script into a shot-by-shot ‘storyboard’ and decide the order of shooting 

-plan a filming schedule, taking into account the director’s ideas and the budget 

-oversee the hire of locations, props and equipment and checking weather reports

-recruit the cast and crew 

-make sure that filming stays on schedule by driving it forward, so they make announcements and give directions to co-ordinate the cast and crew

-supervise a team of 2nd and 3rd ADs and runners 

-motivate the cast and crew 

-manage health and safety on set

-ensure that everyone is on standby and ready for the Director's cue for action

-supervise the other Assistant Directors and oversee the preparation of the daily 'call sheet' (a document with daily shooting logistics, distributed to all cast and crew)


Because of the scale of our studio shoot, there might not be 2nd and 3rd ADs so 1st AD will need to take care of all the stuff that the 2nd and 3rd AD would do.

2nd AD

 -produce each day's call sheet
-be the link between the set and the production office
-paper work
-organise transport(?)
-make sure that cast members are in make-up, wardrobe or on set at the right times 


3rd AD

-make sure extras are on set at the right times
-brief the extras and give them their cues
