From Liz's lecture
-the mirrored self is projected self
-not true self
-you post to the mirror

There are books saying you can boost confidence by looking into the mirror telling yourself "you can do it". Also in films characters talk to themselves in mirror to practise a speech and etc..

The Magic Mirror in Snow White(lecture):
http://www.cgjung-vereniging.nl/home/files/nancy_vd_berg.pdf
"Thus, a mirror symbolizes the threshold between consciousness and the unconscious, and by looking into it, one may look towards the depths of the unconscious. And, the image that a mirror produces is symbolic and can be made sense of in both the unconscious and the conscious worlds."

Synopsis

A poetic short film about the Pro-democracy Movement in Hong Kong using simple visuals and a complicated soundscape. Three actors interact with the symbols and express themselves through movements. Symbols, like umbrellas and face masks, from the Umbrella Movement in 2014 are used. Smoke slowly occupies the screen as the film progresses to represent the usage of tear gas on innocent public and the fact that it tenses up the situation. Main elements of the soundscape will include electric guitar and voices from different people who have a say about democracy.

Actors might be duplicated with green screen to create a crowd representing a generation of similar minded people.

Sound Recording Day 1

It is time for some sound recording in the sound booth(AM).

I played with some stuff in the sound booth trying to get some sound for car crash and the experimental stuff. Jay is my voice actor so we also did the narrative part.

I also get some fabric rustling to match with the walking of the character or the crowd. I am not sure if I need that but just in case.

In the afternoon, I started to put stuff together in the sound editing room. I carefully choose and put the narrative voice first, then the more detailed sounds. I moved the tracks quite a bit.

Right now I am kinda stuck with my creativity. I think I need more sounds so that I can have a overview of the soundscape and plan it better. In the weekend I will have the Zoom out from the equipment hire store so I can get more sounds in the weekend.

Important sounds to get in the weekend:

footsteps
crowd noise
some more experimental sounds

For sound booth next Tuesday:

Sakura's voice
crowd voice

100 Years of tear gas:
http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2014/08/100-years-of-tear-gas/378632/

First introduced by France in 1914 the World War I, tear gas has now become the favourite weapon in crowd control. It causes burning of the eyes and skin, tearing, and gagging. The governments see it as a "less-lethal" force and people seems to forget that it is a chemical weapon designed for physical and psychological torture.

(A map of locations worldwide where tear gas has been fired on groups of people and large crowds. Location mapping began on Jan 1, 2013.
This map forms part of a research project led by Dr. Anna Feigenbaum, a Lecturer in Media and Politics at Bournemouth University. Follow @drfigtree

All recorded location data is derived from news reports via a google alert. This means that the data captured is incomplete as many incidences go unreported or are documented but not caught in the google filter.)

Green screen crowd, represents a group of similar minded people

Blood, in black and white scene so doesn't need to be real blood, just a thick dark liquid

Fog machine?

Use lighting gels?

Initial ideas about my film

Visual:

Simple, pretty, pleasing to watch

Make use of elements from protest events
e.g. fog machine to create a tear gas effect, the amount of fog in a scene represent different mind set or stages of a event
e.g. umbrella, facemasks, torch lights
e.g. blood (black and white scenes)

Sound:

Experimental soundscape, set the mood and tell audience how to view the visuals

Voice overs from different people who experienced these events or have a say to it

Electric guitar for the tension part of the film

Extras:

Maybe layout some physical objects for the audiences to see when the film is exhibited in the uni. I don't have much but some photos taken when I was there.

Note:

I want this film to make people know about this event and notice many other events. It is also make out of hope. I will focus on the storytelling so that the story can be told through out the film, communicating to the audience, instead of putting stuffs that I already know and play with it too much that no one understands it.

Last lesson with James - Progress

Today is the last lesson with James and I am trying to make the most of it by focusing on editing my initial sounds. I don't have much yet but I hope through editing them I can realise what I don't know about Pro Tools and get James' immediate help.

I have used all the sounds that I want from the the sound list already. Some of them don't sound like what I expected so I will re record them. The rack of the soundscape is ready to put more stuffs in. If you look at the tracks, pink ones are mono and blue ones are stereo.

The track "Mono traffic" is the general environment which is the road. When the characters are in the balcony, it will be more quiet. When the girl cross the road, it will more loud. There is a gap in the middle, leaving room for the experimental part of the soundscape. At the end it is a constant humming that I got from a big truck. It is hinting that he is traumatised seeing his girlfriend's death. I am not quite happy with this track yet. I recorded these sounds with a external mono mic instead of the built in stereo mic so I will like to re record it.

The Mono 1, 2 and 3 are prepared to mix some car accident sounds.

The Mono skidding is the sound of the skidding of the car. I am quite satisfied with it but think it needs a low frequency sound to solidify it. I will try to record it on Wednesday when I have the Foley Room.

The "Rain lightening" is perfect. I am glad that I decided to record it that night.

The "Experimental" track is for when the guy witness his girlfriend's dead and shortly after that. The only track on it is for right at the end of the experimental part that pulls him back to the reality. I got this sound from a jet, loved it.

I will have more tracks like "Crowd noises" to build a richer sound for the environment. Also, I need to write my script for the voice over. Everything seems good right now and I know what I will need to do. On Wednesday I will have the Foley Room so I will update my progress here after that.

Projection Mapping His Buttocks?

This is a video that I found two years ago:

Well, this is what I imagined someone from DFSA would do.

When done in a big scale, projection mapping is stunning:

I really like the technical aspect of it. It's the technology that made this form of art possible. I really appreciate the amount of effort they put in this. The sound designs, moving images, story telling, just like making a film. The entertaining value of it is huge.

Sexy projection mapping?

I saw these Ads before and it is not hard to think of them again. They are so entertaining. I enjoy watching them over and over again. I love how it can bring you back to watch it again.

Maybe that's what I want to achieve, not the skill of projection mapping but the skill of bringing people back to my work. I want people to enjoy watching my work and would like to re-watch them, talk about them with friends and families.

Sound Design Project Ideas

We are told to choose a passage and create a narrative driven soundscape. I am gonna choose a very short story in Chinese called "永遠的蝴蝶", Forever Butterfly.

My translation/ alternation of it:

It was raining. The road was wet, reflecting colours of the green, yellow and red. We were hiding under someone's balcony watching that postbox across the road. In my coat there was a letter to my mother. Sakura said that she can help me post it. I nodded.

"Well, we only have one small umbrella." she smiled while opening the umbrella, getting ready to post the letter for me. The rain was dripping from the thin ribs of the umbrella frame, onto my glasses.

There was a sudden loud car skidding noise. I could see flashbacks of Sakura's life when her body was flying through the air. Slowly, she landed on the cold, wet road like a cherry blossom.

It was spring but felt like the end of autumn.

She was just crossing the road helping me post the letter. Such a simple action but left me remembering it for the rest of my life. I slowly opened my eyes which filled with burning hot tears, feeling lost under that balcony. All the cars stopped, pedestrians went up to the middle of the road. No one knows, lying there in the middle of the road, was my Sakura. She was only five meters away from me but it was too far. There was more rain dripping on my glasses, and in my life.

Why? Only one umbrella?

I felt like I am seeing Sakura, holding the umbrella crossing the road. She offered to help me post the letter, the letter to my mother. I am standing here under the balcony. I feel like I am seeing Sakura still walking toward the middle of the road. The rain wasn't very heavy. However, it was the heaviest rain in my whole life. I wonder if the young Sakura knows what was in my letter.

Mom: I am planning to marry Sakura.

My shorten version of it/ narrative script:

It was cold and wet.

We were hiding under someone's balcony watching that postbox across the road.

"Well, we only have one small umbrella. Let me quickly post it for you."

(Accident)

It was spring but felt like the end of autumn.

Such a simple action but scarred me for the rest of my life.

No one knew, lying there in the middle of the road, was my Sakura.

Why. Only one umbrella?

The rain wasn't very heavy. Yet, it was the heaviest rain in my life. I wonder if my young Sakura knows what was in my letter.

Mom: I am planning to marry Sakura.

The sound script (very early ideas):

**Storm sound - through out the whole soundscape, shows uncertainties, unpredictable events.

Rain (mid-air) - loud

**Rain - quiet, through out the whole soundscape

Traffic - fast, with some water splashing sound

Rain dropping on the floor - more quiet environment, balcony

Sakura - "Well, we only have one small umbrella. Do you want me to post that letter for you? The postbox is just across the road anyway."

Loud skidding

*All sound muffled from this point onwards

Body dropping sound

Bone breaking sound

SILENCE

Mixture of busy footsteps (on wet ground) and voices - "Oh my God!" "Call 999!" "...car accident...girl...come quick!" "...no heartbeats..."

Experimental flashback + main character thinking out loud

"Mom: I am planning to marry Sakura." Everything quiet down for this last sentence

How to do the sounds

I have got a few of the sounds:

rain
storm
traffic
footsteps
Rain dropping on the floor

I need the sound booth for:

voice
-main guy
-Sakura
-crowd
-car skidding
-car impact
-bone breaking
-experimental sounds of the character's mind after the accident

I will head to London to get some more of:

traffic
footsteps
crowd noise

Research:

Car crash (Only one page from this because I am not sure if I am allowed to share more pages)

Studio Shoot Research: 1st Assistant Director

Assistant directors are referred as ADs, they support directors by organising and planning everything on set. Directors are more focused on communicating with the actors, while for ADs they are more focused on communicating with the film crew. 1st ADs will do most of the planning before a production, and manage the set during filming so that the director is free to concentrate on the creative process.

Responsibilities:

-work with the director to break down the script into a shot-by-shot ‘storyboard’ and decide the order of shooting

-plan a filming schedule, taking into account the director’s ideas and the budget

-oversee the hire of locations, props and equipment and checking weather reports

-recruit the cast and crew

-make sure that filming stays on schedule by driving it forward, so they make announcements and give directions to co-ordinate the cast and crew

-supervise a team of 2nd and 3rd ADs and runners

-motivate the cast and crew

-manage health and safety on set

-ensure that everyone is on standby and ready for the Director's cue for action

-supervise the other Assistant Directors and oversee the preparation of the daily 'call sheet' (a document with daily shooting logistics, distributed to all cast and crew)

Because of the scale of our studio shoot, there might not be 2nd and 3rd ADs so 1st AD will need to take care of all the stuff that the 2nd and 3rd AD would do.

2nd AD

-produce each day's call sheet
-be the link between the set and the production office
-paper work
-organise transport(?)
-make sure that cast members are in make-up, wardrobe or on set at the right times

3rd AD

-make sure extras are on set at the right times
-brief the extras and give them their cues

About Installation Arts

Today we had a introduction class about installation arts and I want to add some thoughts to it.

I always know that there is a huge Art community that I didn't quite understand when I was in High School. With my not-so-great results in Science subjects, I decided to take a risk, study a Foundation in a art university. Things went well, I an in 2nd year now. From Foundation till now, installation arts are always in conversations. We take inspirations from installation arts, we go to galleries to see them if we head to London for a day.

When I was in Foundation we had a course trip to Amsterdam that I saw Richard Long's work and discovered Tony Ousler. Richard Long's work is like a all time classic. Tony Ousler is different. Well it is different in my perspectives. I discovered Tony Ousler myself in that trip and I liked it. I feel more connected to his work because I experienced it myself. When he was introduced in class I was "Ha! I know him.". So I really agree that experiencing the installations is important.

This installation interest me the most. Maybe because it is interactive, or because I get to know what the artist think in the video or just because how simple it is. I find simplicity valuable because it is hard to achieve. To me, simplicity is like the efficiency of the communication between the artist and the audience. The higher the efficiency, the more the simplicity. The more the simplicity also cause a higher efficiency. The simplicity of the this work is backed by strong ideas and technical support. So the work can effectively communicate with the audience. What I learn from this is that if you have a well developed idea and well planned presentation of your work, you can communicate with the audience efficiently(correct me if I am wrong please:) ).

I like installation arts and dislike installation arts. All because of one reason, too much information. I like the diversity of it. You can work on any material with different approach on different topics. You achieve amazing result with good combinations. However, it is so free that there are too many works out there for the to experience. Overall, I am excited to see more interesting installations and hope my brain can handle them all.
